I want you to have this

Loss, hope, and the strength to walk in solidarity through the forces of evil greed

I wanted to give this to you now

Through the Fire was written during the height of the low part of 2020, when the hospice company I worked for let me know they didn't have any hours for me. We were losing so many people in the facilities, but hospice wasn't allowed in. People were dying alone, without the comforts they had signed for, and without their loved ones by their side.

I had hemmed and hawed over a few sessions on the vocal before walking into the studio recently and nailing it all the way through. The vocal is one straight take, and I love it for that because it’s real and raw. It’s something I aspire to on every song. Sugarbear sprinkled some magic dust on it with the mandolin part.

In 2025, as those in power seek to destroy our democracy and put in its place an oligarchy married to extremist nationalistic Evangelism, wildfires are wiping large swaths of California out, and women are bleeding to death after being denied basic human rights and healthcare. Eggs are $9 a dozen unless you're my neighbor, then they are $3.

I never thought I would live in the kind of world it appears I am living in today. It's happening very quickly, and the effects are already palpable. My job requires interfacing with the public, and federal health agencies have been banned from providing vital and often emergency information. That alone has had me on the fence about moving back into self-employment. Bird Flu is already here in the United States, and the Marburg virus is burgeoning in Tanzania and beyond. Columbia is being threatened with tariffs, which could put my favorite Mom and Pop coffee shop at risk. The priorities set forth for our current administration begin and end with fostering hate and fear and have not attempted to touch on any of the core issues they ran on.

Here's a song for everyone who is feeling it. For those still walking around with blinders on, I hope you enjoy it too.

As someone who has worked in and around the healthcare system for a quarter century, I advise you to prioritize your physical and mental health. Don't forget to eat, stretch, hydrate, and manage your stress. This is all too much; we are already burnt out, and the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse.

Make yourself the thing you like, dance around like a fool, watch something that makes you laugh.

and I hope this song will help a little, too.

Stay strong.
